In partnership with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, Africana Outreach will present a week-long art exhibition of paintings, photography and sculpture, "New York Through the Eyes of African Immigrants," as part of Immigrant History Week 2007 from April 13 to 22, 2007.

Opening Reception and Preview is Friday, April 13, 2007 from 6:00PM until 9:00PM in the gallery of the Immigrants Building, 7 West 44th Street, off Fifth Avenue in Midtown. Refreshments will be served.

Why should you go? Without this event, general audiences will continue to have little or no idea of the important contributions of native Africans and their impact on the art being created in New York City today. This event enables an understanding of the current immigrant experience from an artist's perspective without bias.

NY Through the Eyes of African Immigrants is free and open to the public. It offers a unique opportunity for new or existing art enthusiasts and professionals to purchase art, the proceeds of which will go to Africana Outreach, Inc., a Brooklyn-based non-profit committed to bringing people of African descent together through the arts.

On Saturday, April 21, a day-long program includes a children's art workshop from 10:00AM-12:00PM, followed by a panel discussion at 1:00PM with curators, gallery directors and artists discussing the state of contemporary African art in New York City.

FREE TO THE PUBLIC

Africana Outreach was founded by Nigerian-American artist Osaretin Ighile to help foster relationships between communities. In 2005, Africana Outreach spearheaded a Unity Walk from the African Burial Ground in Manhattan to downtown Brooklyn that drew local community activists, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and the Commissioner for Immigrant Affairs, Guillermo Linares.

Immigrant History Week 2007 is a city-wide celebration that honors the experiences and contributions of immigrants in New York City. Established by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2004 and coordinated by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, Immigrant History Week is a rich collection of free or low-cost programs that build cross-cultural understanding between diverse New Yorkers. Africana Outreach thanks the Immigrant Foundation, the Contemporary African Art Gallery, The Immigrants Foundation and Two07Art Gallery for their partnership. For more information, dial +1 347 405-8663 or 311 or www.worldwideafricanregistry.org
